May Kasahara says that balding is the guide to death. Earlier in the story she said to Toru that his hairline is starting to recede, so that may mean that he is leading towards his death. The story has revolved around the unknown, mysterious air of Toru and his seemingly harmless adventures. However, the people he's met and associated with are warning him of his passing or dangers in the future that may come.
