Senior Project #20

Time Spent: 30 hours

The event we were planning for awhile was yesterday and for the first half of today. We sold about 30+ shirts at the event for an on-site fundraiser at our station for the Relay for Life fundraiser. The event was 24+ hours. I walked for a majority of the event and we had time shifts, so that our team wouldn't get exhausted by the time it reached early morning.

It was fun and a relief to finally finish the event that I've been helping plan and promote for a few months.

Senior Project #19

Met with Yon Sim again she said that the logo was still in its first stage and that I should be using Adobe Illustrator instead of photoshop cs5. She said that the shirt design was good, but that we needed to have better eye direction for the design. We drew some sketches out and we came up with three different designs that we should try. Yon also explained that we should be drawing our stuff more and that we shouldn't be digitally vectoring everything that we do because with that there's no connection and our things look digital instead of having a flowing feel to it.

I'm going to be finishing the rest of my blogs by May 22, 2011. That's the day of the event and in between that date from now to the 22nd I will be meeting up with Yon Sim. She just recently got back from a trip out of the country and I'm currently waiting for her reply email.

Senior Project #18

Today, I “painted the town purple”, which basically means I go out to the community and I advertise Relay for Life.

I went to the local businesses across from South City High School and I asked if they would want to make a team or volunteer the day off, but I got negative responses from them. However, they did let me put up fliers up to help advertise and to get the word out.

Next, I went to a local neighborhood and started going door to door putting fliers at people’s doorsteps. I had not designed the fliers used because of issues with the logo and copyright infringement that does not allow me to use certain words, and images. Therefore, the next best thing was to use premade fliers directly from the American Cancer Society.

Senior Project #17

I went to a Relay for Life meeting and discussed our group’s progress with Allison Harrer, an American Cancer Society event coordinator. She was pleasantly supportive and delighted with our progress that we made so far.

She also signed my mentor and confirmation forms.
During the meeting I agreed to be a foot soldier and walk around the South San Francisco neighborhood and ask for volunteers and to advertise with fliers.

Senior Project #16

Allison called me and said that Relay may be postponed because we’re way behind our quotas and goals. She informed me that it may get postponed until somewhere in July, which in my opinion would be beneficial for our project overall.

This has made me realize that I need to really step up what I've been doing and that I need to upgrade the website and finish the Home page design

Senior Project #14

Our group met at Millbrae Pancake house to plan out our ideas and create a calendar to work by.

The items that we discussed were:
• Fundraising goal
• Shirt Design
• Budget
• Website
• Interviews

Our fundraising goal currently is $2000 and our start up budget is going to be the amount it takes to order around 50-100 shirts. Each shirt would be sold for at least $12 and at most $15.

We discussed how we need to start our mission statement because we don’t really know what we’re aiming for or how big we want to go. We decided that we are going to advertise our team rather than the entire relay because they already have their own thing instituted already, so trying to work with their ideas would be robbing us of our creativity.

Our team is also going to be under the assistance of ASB because they’d help greatly with selling shirts and raising the amount of funds we’d need to reach our goal.

We’re also going to add another member to our group, Emily Sison, here project is videography and she’d be recording our interviews with cancer survivors.

Senior Project #13

Clarissa, Matt, and I talked about our project through aim.

I finally finalized the overall website design and the basics of it. I decided to keep it simple and chose the main colors that we were focusing on so link font ended up being red, orange, and yellow. Yon Sim taught me that the logo should be at the top left, so I placed it there, however, there seems to be too much negative space to the left of the logo. As of right now though the site is bare because we need to finalize the T-shirt design and get the pictures of survivors to fill out the site.

I told them that we don’t have specific goal dates and that without them we’re being hindered and falling behind. During tomorrow’s morning meeting we are going to create a calendar, and budget so we know what we’re going to be doing specifically.

For the about page I’m having Matt and Clarissa take portrait shots of us and I’m going to have them write bios about themselves.

Senior Project #12

My senior project group decided to meet tomorrow to talk about what how big we’re going to go and what we want to essentially focus on.

We’re going to meet at Matt’s house on Friday morning to decide our budget and how we’ll be able to get starting money and upgrading the website. I’m not exactly sure if we’re going to be using Danielle’s T-shirt maker anymore or if we’re going to order shirts.

Senior Project #11

Brendan, Clarissa, and I went to Matt’s house to finalize some ideas and to actually start to complete things in order to progress forward with the project.
We changed and decided on:
• Spark Hope is our group name and Ignited We Stand became our slogan
• The T-shirt is going to have a phoenix on it—I want it on the top left corner of the shirt
• I designed the logo—first drew it then vectored it—colors we chose were yellow and red orange
• The cancer survivors we interview we’re going to ask if they can join our team and walk with us and also their family’s if they’re interested in doing it.

I’m going to put the stories and interviews up on the site on a survivor tab.

Our campaign group talked today in photo’s class about what we each wanted. We decided to stay with our cancer idea because we were throwing around ideas of whether or not we wanted to switch to homelessness or the animal shelter. We worked on our logo and sketched rough designs that involve our concept of a Phoenix and second chances.
My mentor Yon Sim informed me that she would be leaving the country and would be returning on the 28th of April.
We decided to ask cancer survivors we know if they would be comfortable to participate in an interview for cancer awareness.

Senior Project #9

Researched what makes a successful logo.
Elements of a successful logo that I have noticed are:
• Simple
• Has a basic shape
• Bolded outline for the logo’s edges
• Either free form or shaped in a circle

I looked up what makes up a successful logo and how I would be able to replicate one using Photoshop. I learned that a header and logo work together to make a site more appealing. I also learned that if you were to put a logo on a website the best place to put it would be the top left corner because our eyes are naturally drawn to that area first.

Senior Project #8

Clarissa and I discussed our community service portion of our project. I told her of my efforts for designing the logo and website. I told her my concerns about our message and what we really wanted to show and portray through our campaign. We tried to decide what names to use.
Clarissa wanted to do a name with a Latin root.

We both agreed that “Memento Renasci”—remember rebirth related more to our phoenix logo and the message of a second chance at life.

Senior Project #7

I went with Clarissa and Matt to Stanford University to meet with their mentor Andy Lin. The great thing about our combined efforts for the senior project is that I’m able to experience two different mentorships and learn two different skills that go hand-in-hand.

Even though we spent 4+ hours walking around learning about natural lighting and using photo equipment (umbrellas, flashes, etc…) we only did 30 minutes of graphic design/ photo editing and that adobe lightroom is the best program to use for editing photos.

I learned that flashes don’t last for more than an instantaneous moment and that the graph for a flash is similar to a sine/cosine function. I also learned a lot about ambient light, aperture, high spend sync and how they all come together to make a good photo.

Andy and I also discussed our specific photography interests like how I’m more interested in landscape and “big” picture types of photos rather than portraits and close-up shots. He told me that landscape/nature pictures need less editing, but require you to be in the right moment and the right time so taking a good nature picture is a lot about luck.

Senior Project #5

I finally was able to schedule a meeting with my mentor Yon Sim in a café located in a Whole Foods Market in San Francisco. Matt came with me so that we would be able to give an overview of both sides of our project.
Yon gave us very good advice on what we should be doing and how we should be going about our project because it seemed that our ideas were too premature.

I learned that the best campaigns and slogans are simple, but have a lot of meaning behind them. Yon also told us that we have to cater to the needs of the client or project/ our audience—what are we trying to accomplish with what we’re doing. She also gave me good advice on what programs I should be using for certain things.

• Dreamweaver: Creating an Html website
• InDesign: Viewing work from Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator and best for multiple pages
• Illustrator: Is better than Photoshop and what she uses the most—she advised me to get the program in order to fully be able to teach me
• Photoshop CS5: Better for web integration, but getting outshined by Illustrator

She told us that we need to brainstorm more and that she’d help along the way with any critique’s or edits for our designs and website.

Senior Project #6

Time spent: 2 hours
Total time: 12 hours

Explored capabilities of Photoshop CS5. Tried to get used to the commands and layering, using brushes, and vectoring.

Started to edit the logo and see what we could use or not. It turned out to be harder than I originally thought it would be because the things I was trying to create didn’t fit with what we wanted to do. The work was also very obvious to have been done by someone with complete inexperience with using the software before. The first logo trial had too much going on with it and there was too much excessive overlap with it.

Will continue to flesh out the ideas and look for more inspirational pictures.

Senior Project #4

Went to a Relay for Life meeting and Matt and I discussed our campaign ideas with Allison, the American Cancer Society representative. She was excited to hear what we were planning to do and that she approved of it.

She told me that she would have to email me the restrictions on the American Cancer Society logo if I were to use it on a shirt design. She also gave me certain project ideas that I could do to help with the Relay for Life site as in creating a photomontage and an agenda for the day of the event.

Senior Project #3

Total Time: 6 hours

Today, was the first time that our campaign group met up to discuss somewhat what we’re going to be doing and how are we going to accomplish our goals. We talked about themes and slogans that we could be using in order to raise cancer awareness.

We agreed that I would possibly be creating a website to provide information about our project and for advertisement flyers were necessary and that the shirt design would need to be finished.

Possible themes we want to include is
• Second chances
• Phoenix
• Fire/light
• Surviving

Ignited We Stand was what our group decided would be our slogan or main message for our project. A phoenix will also be incorporated somehow because of its symbolism for rebirth.

Senior Project #2

Today during photos class Clarissa, Matt, Brendan, and I decided that we would be working together on senior project. We wanted to do something big and decided we’d make a campaign for cancer awareness through the use of art.

My portion of the project would consist of using graphic design to publicize and raise funds for the SSF Relay for Life—an American Cancer Society event. I would be hopefully learning first hand on using adobe Photoshop and gaining skills on creating flyers, montages and whatever my mentor would be able to teach me.

Ms. Robbins also gave us information on one of her best friends who is a professional graphic designer.

Senior Project #1

Since senior project seems to be a lot more constrained than what I was expecting it to be from last year I started to research a bit about what things would interest me.

I eventually formed a list of possible project ideas

• · Disc Jockeying: Community service would be to DJ at events such as Senior Citizen Dances held by Rotary/other SSF service clubs
• · Graphic Design: Community service would be to bring awareness to a certain cause
• · Event Planning: Community service would be to plan an event to raise money for Save the Arts charity. Would have band, drama, and dance perform and sell tickets
• · Cancer: Community service would be to help the American Cancer Society
• · Animal Rescue: Community service would be to volunteer at San Mateo SPCA

These are the current ideas and things I am at least interested in. However, upon more research I found that SPCA has planned volunteer jobs, a 6-month dedication requirement, and an age requirement to volunteer, so I’ve decided to not do it.

I’m really either leaning towards Disc Jockeying, Graphic Design, and Cancer Awareness. Using these ideas hopefully I’ll be able to combine ideas and see what happens.
